Salem Red SoxBOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox have announced personnel moves in its 2016 field staffs for their minor league affiliates. Red Sox Director of Player Development Ben Crockett made the announcements.

Joe Oliver has been named Salem’s manager in his third year on a professional coaching staff, all with the Red Sox organization. The former catcher, who finished his playing career with Boston in 2001, spent the last two seasons managing Lowell.

Paul Abbott will return for his second season as Salem’s pitching coach, his sixth coaching season in the organization.

Joining Salem’s staff is hitting coach Nelson Paulino, who enters his 19th season coaching Boston affiliates. Most recently, Paulino spent time at Greenville from 2014-2015.

Nick Kuchwara will be the team’s head athletic trainer in his first season with Salem. He was the trainer for Lowell last season after having previously worked in the same capacity in Portland and Pawtucket.

Carlos Febles , Salem’s manager for the last two seasons, has been promoted to the same role with Double-A Portland. Hitting coach Jon Nunnally, who was with Salem in 2015, joins him there. Salem’s athletic trainer from 2012-2015, David Herrera, has been promoted to Latin America Medical Coordinator in his ninth season in the Red Sox organization. In addition, he will serve as the athletic trainer for the Gulf Coast League Red Sox.

PowerballFrom the Virginia Lottery: Although the jackpot-winning tickets in the historic January 13 Powerball drawing were not bought in Virginia, the Commonwealth benefitted from the excitement. During the 20 drawings of the jackpot run that began in November and ended with Wednesday night’s drawing, sales of Powerball tickets in Virginia generated approximately $34.7 million in profit. By law, all of that profit goes to K-12 public education in the Commonwealth. In last night’s drawing alone, more than 700,000 Powerball tickets bought in Virginia won prizes. That includes two tickets that each won $1 million, four tickets that each won $100,000 and 20 tickets that each won 50,000. Here’s where the Roanoke Valley winning tickets were bought:

$1 million winner:  7-Eleven, 2035 Roanoke Blvd., Salem

$50,000 winner:  Summer Shop, 2210 Electric Road, Roanoke

 

Daniel Percy ArnotFrom Franklin County Sheriff’s Office: Franklin County, VA – On January 13, 2016 Daniel Percy Arnot entered a plea agreement in Franklin County Circuit Court. In the plea agreement, Arnot plead guilty to the first degree murder of Brian Edward Foy. Mr. Foy was shot dead in his home on May 2, 2015 in the Moneta area of Franklin County. According to the plea agreement, Arnot will receive two life terms and, additionally, a term of 145 years and 12 months, with fifty years of the sentence being an active period of incarceration.

Bedford CountyFrom the Bedford County Sheriff’s office: Bedford County citizens can now sign up to receive Emergency Alerts from the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office and Bedford County Fire and Rescue Services.  Alerts will be sent out simultaneously through the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office Website along with other social media links. The system will send approximately 2000 calls a minute. Sheriff Brown advises that the system is very easy to use. Last week, Sheriff Brown used the alert system to notify businesses in the Town of Bedford and Bedford County to be on the lookout out for counterfeit money.

Explore ParkROANOKE COUNTY, VA (January 13, 2016)   – Over the next few weeks Roanoke County will be accepting public input on draft conceptual plans currently being developed for Explore Park. Two open house style community meetings have been established, during which staff will be on hand to show progress to date on areas such as park circulation, natural inventory, placement of amenities and long-term development.

 

Community Meetings:

  • Thursday, January 28 – 6pm to 8pm at Vinton War Memorial
  • Tuesday, February 2 – 6pm to 8pm at South County Library

Fatal-fireJanuary 12, 2016 (ROANOKE COUNTY)—The Fire Marshal’s Office has determined that the cause of the fatal fire on Monday morning was accidental in nature. The fire originated in the kitchen, but because of the heavy fire damage, a specific cause is undetermined. The medical examiner’s office has confirmed the victim to be Mark F. Coles who was 61 years of age and lived in the house. The cause of death was determined to be “smoke inhalation and thermal burns”.  Continue reading

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is asking for assistance in identifying a suspect in multiple shopliftings at the Dollar General store in Westlake. No suspect vehicle was identified with this incident. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information related to this crime to contact the Crime Line anonymously at 540-344-8500 or contact Capt. P. Caldwell at 540-352-5174.

Fatal Accident-WFIRFrom Virginia State Police: Covington, Va. – Virginia State Police Trooper J. A. Kelly is investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash that occurred on January 10, 2016.  The crash occurred at 9:30 am Sunday morning on Route 220, one mile south of Route 687 in Alleghany County. A 2003 Ford Taurus was traveling north on Route 220 when it crossed the center line and struck a 2015 Audi S4 which was traveling south on Route 220. The 2003 Ford was driven by Bonnetta Jean Beverly, 42, of Covington, Va.  Ms. Beverly was not wearing her seatbelt and died at the scene. The 2015 Audi was driven by Christopher Scott Boone, 41, Moneta, Va.  Mr. Boone was not injured. The crash remains under investigation.

From the Virginia Museum of Transportation: The 611 will move from Roanoke to the North Carolina Transportation Museum in February in preparation for maintenance and its annual Federal Railway Administration inspection. Following that work, spring will see a total of four weekends of public excursions behind 611 on the Norfolk Southern system. A variety of seating options, including coach, first class, and dome cars is planned for each excursion. In addition, special appearances by 611 are being planned for Roanoke, Manassas and Danville, VA, and Spencer, NC.

PowerballFrom the Virginia Lottery:  The excitement generated by that $1.3 billion estimated jackpot for Wednesday’s drawing is expected to lead to record sales in Virginia. If one ticket matches all six numbers in Wednesday’s drawing, the winner will have a choice: either take the full $1.3 billion jackpot in 30 annual payments, or choose a one-time cash option of approximately $806 million before taxes. If multiple tickets match all six numbers, the jackpot will be divided among them equally.
