Volunteers from Roanoke’s Red Cross chapter and Fire-EMS personnel will canvass Northwest Roanoke City neighborhoods, offering fresh smoke detector batteries and leaving information behind on fire safety. Bank OnLocal banks and credit unions are taking part in “Bank On Roanoke Valley,” hoping to attract those in the area that are “unbanked.”  Low or no fee checking and savings accounts, no mininum balances and free ATM cards are part of the plan. Churches and non-profits will help spread the word. United Way of Roanoke Valley is spearheading the new Bank On program. Gene Marrano reports on today’s news conference:
