Another record was set at the Roanoke Rescue Mission last night. CEO Joy Sylvester-Johnson says 421 people stayed in the emergency shelter last night, the most ever in its 63-year history. News/Talk 960’s Bob Clark has the details.

A new trail plan is being considered by officials of the Blue Ridge Parkway. News/Talk 960’s Bob Clark has the story.

The plan would create a critical linkage between the trails on the Parkway and the Roanoke Valley Greenways. An Environmental Assessment for the trail plan involving the Roanoke Valley section of the Parkway is currently underway. David Anderson of the Blue Ridge Parkway’s Asheville office says it will clarify a lot of issues for local users of the trails.
An open house is scheduled for September 1st from 3:00 to 8:00 pm at the Explore Park Visitor Center. The public also can express their views by calling or mailing the Parkway’s Asheville, NC office by September 12th.

The U.S.Census report indicates from 2007 to 2010, the region’s growth rate was 0.8%. That’s almost equal to the statewide increase over the same period of time. The report reveals the migration to the Roanoke Region comes from surrounding counties in Virginia as well as Hampton Roads, northern Virginia and the nation.

The Better Business Bureau warns of another scam. This one suggests it’s from PayPal, and it generally attempts to hit consumers who have posted items for sale on Craigslist or eBay. The story from News/Talk 960’s Bob Clark.

Researchers at Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia are building a new sensor that could help stop falls by elderly persons. The device will measure small declining increments in gait, posture and mobility. The sensor will be worn on clothing or on an ankle and is expected to be available next year.

The shuttle bus service from Roanoke that allows a connection to Amtrak in Lynchburg is seeing a continued rise in ridership. News/Talk 960’s Bob Clark has the story.

Virginia Western Community College is launching a new campus printing service. The “WEPA”  Wireless Everywhere Print Anywhere is designed to help the college save paper and money.  The college estimates it will save $26,000 in paper and toner costs a year. The story from News/Talk 960’s Bob Clark.
