A Roanoke tradition that began in the 1970’s is back for another holiday season. Fantasyland features Christmas figures donated by department stores from years ago. This  year, it will be at the Dumas Center at 108 1st Street through through December 23rd. Donate a non-perishable food item and receive a dollar off regular admission. WFIR’s Bob Clark has more.

Over 400 persons are expected to attend today’s conference on Alzheimer’s disease in Roanoke. Dr.Sam Gandy, a leader in Alzheimer’s research, will be the keynote speaker; he will be joined by 13 additional experts in research, caregiving and the best practices in dementia care.  The story from WFIR’s Bob Clark.

Eder Rodriguez-Guzman

Floyd County investigators await autopsy and toxicology reports on the death of a two-year-old girl. Jocelyn Rodriguez-Guzman was found dead in her home Wednesday night.  Her father, Eder Rodriguez-Guzman, faces a capital murder charge. The latest from WFIR’s Bob Clark.

Experts urge you to be careful about the food options at your home this holiday season — for your dogs and cats. Lauren Trotter of Vinton Veterinary Hospital says  some foods can be toxic and even deadly to your pets, and she urges you to keep them on their regular diets. VirginiaTech has received a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to work on the elimination of polio throughout the world. If progress is shown, the $100,000 grant may be extended. WFIR’s Bob Clark has the story.

For the fourth consecutive year, Virginia roads will see an increase in travel during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. About 1,300,000 Virginia residents will travel at least 50 miles for the holiday, and AAA reports 60% of travelers say the economy will not impact travel plans. Details from WFIR’s Bob Clark.
