Virginia is launching a registry for residents to let friends a families know their health care wishes if they are unable to make their own decisions. It will securely store the documents on line, allowing medical providers, emergency responders and family members to honor their wishes. WFIR’s Bob Clark has more on this story.

The Virginia Lottery thinks its tickets make great gifts — but not when it’s against the law. Under Virginia law, anyone who gives a lottery ticket to a person younger than 18 is guilty of a Class 3 misdemeanor, punishable with a fine of up to $500.WFIR’s Bob Clark has details.

Americans will see more and more elderly drivers on the roadway in the next few years.  AAA says in less than 10 years, one out of every four drivers will be 65 or older on the highway, and all of us need to be aware of the increase.  More from WFIR’s Bob Clark.

Lawyers for 202 Market are going before the full Alcohol Beverage Control Board this afternoon, appealing a ruling that would suspend the restaurant’s liquor license for last February’s striptease.  An ABC hearing officer ruled in October that 202 Market can either pay a $1,000 fine and lose its liquor license for three days, or it can pay no fine and lose it for 10 days. The Medicare open enrollment program for seniors ends tomorrow.  Eligible seniors wishing to change their programs must do so by tomorrow at midnight. If they are satisfied with their present Medicare and prescription program, they do not need to take any action.  Details from WFIR’s Bob Clark.

Sugar Bowl packages for Virginia Tech’s game with Michigan are already available. The Hokies will be making their fourth trip to New Orleans when they meet the Michigan Wolverines January 3rd at the Superdome.  Travel agencies have a number of packages available, as  WFIR’s Bob Clark reports.

Ridership continues to increase on the Smart Way Bus between Roanoke and Lynchburg.  The bus leaves from parking lot C at the Roanoke Civic Center each morning, returning in the evening, and connects with the Amtrak train in Lynchburg. The service is available seven days a week and cost $4 one way. More from WFIR’s Bob Clark.

A campaign to remove impaired drivers from Roanoke County highways during the holiday season begins today. It is part of an effort to continue a trend of fewer DUI-related crashes in the county in recent holiday seasons. WFIR’s Bob Clark Reports.

The New Year’s Millionaire Raffle is back at the Virginia Lottery, one with a winning history in our region. Two Roanoke groups have each won $1 million in recent years, and last year, a Buchanan man took home one of the top prizes. All the winners will be posted on the Virginia Lottery website Janaury 1st at 2:00 pm. More from WFIR’s Bob Clark.

New construction is set to begin soon at Martinsville Speedway. The project will result in new and larger restrooms and a wider concourse area at the speedway. The project will employ about 35 workers, and work should be finished in two and a half months. More on the story from WFIR’s Bob Clark.
