Roanoke police are looking for a suspect they say should be considered armed and dangerous.  Twenty-seven-year-old Anthony Brian Barnett of Roanoke is wanted on a malicious wounding warrant in connection with a shooting on the 2900 block of Williamson Road early in the morning of August 18, 2013.

Police say anyone who knows Barnett’s whereabouts should call 911.  Anyone with information on the case can call the Roanoke Police Department at 540-853-5959, or Crime Line at 540-344-8500.

Quinnipiac-Poll-ImageA new Quinnipiac University poll out this morning in the Virginia governor’s race shows Democrat Terry McAuliffe ahead 48 to 42 percent over Republican Ken Cuccinelli. The pollsters say this poll surved likely voters and cannot be compared to previous polls, which surveyed registered voters and showed a much closer race.

WFIR-LOGO-1August means the start of a new school year, and for some young people, it also brings on new pressures to try drugs or alcohol. A Roanoke Prevention Alliance spokesperson says once school starts, some students find themselves around other youths more than they did in the summer — and some of those peers might be talking about drug or alcohol use. WFIR’s Starr Anderson has the story.

 

Roanoke-CountyRoanoke County has received a $10,000 grant from the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries to purchase bear-proof garbage bins. The county’s Solid Waste Manager says the new containers will help keep the county cleaner and safer. The county plans on covering half of the cost of the bins, with interested residents paying the other half. WFIR’s Starr Anderson has the story.

Walgreens Robbery 2 081213Roanoke police have released surveillance photos of a man suspected of holding up the Walgreens at the corner of Williamson and Hershberger roads. It happened about 3:30 a.m. Monday. A store employee told police that the man approached the register with an item for purchase. Police say he then demanded money from the register and threatened to harm the employee. The robber did not display a weapon. He fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

“The Great Bull Run” photo

A Spain-inspired bull run is happening in a little over a week at the Virginia Motorsports Park in Petersburg, but animal rights groups are urging the park to drop the event, saying the bulls’ safety is in jeopardy. But a founder of the “The Great Bull Run” says it’s different from the Running of the Bulls in Spain and the bulls’ safety is a priority. WFIR’s Starr Anderson has the story.

Studies show that August has accounted for more lives lost on the highways than any other month of the year. Last August in Virginia, an average of 325 car crashes happened daily.
