It was only a test — and it was not supposed to go out to 30,000 Roanoke County land line telephones. But a warning about an escaped inmate had many county residents wondering what was going on. It is part of a “reverse 911” system Roanoke County plans to implement within the next month.WFIR’s Starr Anderson has the story.

The Democrat running for Congress in the 9th District has spent this week focusing on health care. Anthony Flaccavento disagrees with Rep. Morgan Griffith, who has joined his fellow Republicans in the House in repeatedly voting to repeal the Obama Administration’s health care bill. Flaccavento says the health care law addresses important needs, extending coverage to most uninsured Americans and putting a focus on primary and preventative care. Flaccavento, a farmer and entrepreneur from Abingdon, says he also disagrees with Griffith on a number of other issues, from tax policy to coal industry regulations.
President Barack Obama will hold a “small grassroots” event at Roanoke’s historic Fire Station No. 1 on Friday night around 7:00 p.m. Tickets will be available starting at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday — one per person on a first come, first served basis.
