A government shutdown may have been averted for now, but another and perhaps bigger budget battle looms later this year. Congressman Morgan Griffith doesn’t sound eager to force a shutdown showdown, but as News/Talk 960’s Evan Jones reports, he says you can’t rule out the possibility.

This looks to be the week Roanoke City School Board members have awaited for years — approving a school year that begins before Labor Day. As News/Talk 960’s Evan Jones reports, they’re set to approve a start in late August.

A whooping cough outbreak in Floyd County has forced one school to close for the week  and sent close to 30 people to doctors for treatment. Blue Mountain School, an alternative coed school, appears to be at the outbreak’s center.  As News/Talk 960’s Evan Jones reports, Floyd County’s whooping cough rate is usually higher than statewide averages.
