If you are looking for a job, make sure your Facebook page will pass muster with a prospective employer. More and more of them ask applicants to show them their page — and some even ask for account names and passwords. A Roanoke labor attorney says current laws do not directly address such issues, but she has some general advice for both employers and job-seekers. WFIR’s Evan Jones has more.

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation is looking for teenagers who want to join the State Parks Youth Conservation Corps this summer.  The three-week sessions provide food and lodging and pay each teen $500 upon completion. The department says the Corps can serve both as a useful work experience and resume builder. WFIR’s Evan Jones has the story.

River Laker -- before the striptease

The Roanoke City Libraries worker who performed a stip-tease during a fund-raiser claims the city is now retaliating with negative job evaluations and job restrictions, and he wants a judge to look into the case. It’s the striptease in February of last year that led the ABC Board to order a temporary liquor license suspension of 202 Market. River Laker says it was an exercise of free speech, protesting the “Valentini” fund raiser which he says demeaned people. WFIR’s Evan Jones has the story.

Acting City Attorney Timothy Spencer says he cannot comment because it involves both a personnel matter and pending litigation.

A statewide poll shows lower approval ratings for both Governor McDonnell and state lawmakers.  The Quinnipiac University Poll shows the governor still above 50%, but at 53%, it is the lowest since they starting Virginia polling last June. And as WFIR’s Evan Jones reports, the news for legislators appears even more negative.

The American Civil Liberties Union will ask the U.S. Justice department to review Virginia’s recently-passed voter-ID law if Governor McDonnell signs it. The bill would require identification ranging from a driver’s license to utility bill when voting — or temporarily setting that vote aside until identity could be verified. WFIR’s Evan Jones has the story.

Abandoned puppies

Someone apparently abandoned a half-dozen puppies on the side of Interstate 81, and the quick work of two passing drivers may have helped save almost every one of them. As WFIR’s Evan Jones reports, one of those drivers is very familiar with animal rescues.

Two bald eagle chicks have hatched in recent days at a Richmond nest getting thousands of on-line views worldwide. The camera’s presence there is to monitor something unthinkable in Virginia just a few decades ago — bald eagles fighting over territory. WFIR’s Evan Jones has the story.

State forestry officials say the Poor Mountain brush fire is 100% contained. Now they’re trying to determine how it started, and as WFIR’s Evan Jones reports, they believe the cause is human-related.

The fire burned about 20 acres after starting Friday afternoon near the base of Poor Mountain. Weekend rains helped keep the fire from spreading even further. State Forestry Department officials say while the fire may be fully contained, they would like to see some more rainfall before declaring it out and posing no further danger.

There are 35 state parks across the Commonwealth, and their popularity means visitors should act soon to book accommodations during the popular spring and summer seasons. WFIR’s Steve Mabry explains what to expect during your visit.
