It’s been a year since the 5.8 magnitude earthquake rattled Virginia. The quake was felt all the way from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico and was among the largest to occur on the Eastern seaboard during the past 400 years. Geological teams are still studying on the ground and in the air trying to learn more.WFIR’s Starr Anderson has more.

With more tropical storms and hurricanes predicted this year, Virginia officials are urging you to have an emergency plan. State Emergency Coordinator Michael Cline says we’re entering the peak of the season for Atlantic hurricanes. And he says other emergencies, such as the June wind storm, strike with little warning, so the time to get ready for emergencies is now. Continue reading

The American Cancer Society is looking for Roanoke Valley volunteers to help with a long-term, landmark study. Dr. Alpa Patel is principal investigator of the study, which seeks to understand genetics, lifestyle and environmental factors that cause cancer. The study plans to enroll at least 300,000 healthy adults between the ages of 30 and 65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer.

Roanoke election officials want to know what city residents think about a plan to realign election precincts. Registrar Lavern Shepherd says if it’s adopted, the plan would reduce the number of precincts from 32 to 19, but could not take effect until next year. Shepherd says the city has scheduled information sessions in each quadrant of the city.
