Local law enforcement agencies and several prevention groups got together this morning to make a point: don’t drink to excess and drive over the holidays. Increased attention to the issue and more sobriety checkpoints have sharply reduced the number of alcohol-related crashes in recent years – down 60 percent in Roanoke City since 2008 … down 42 percent in Roanoke County. Roanoke County police chief Howard Hall is also chair of the Blue Ridge Transportation Safety Board coalition:

Long-time WSLS-10 news anchor Karen McNew is leaving TV for a communications position with Carilion Clinic; she starts there in January. McNew was with Channel 10 for more than 16 years. “I have accepted the position of Senior Communications Consultant for Carilion Clinic. I have enjoyed my 16 1/2 years with WSLS 10. However, I am thrilled to be part of the Carilion Clinic mission of health and wellness through quality patient care and community programs! I start January 5, 2015,” said McNew on her Facebook page. Next year there will be new concert and events venue in Roanoke – underneath the Walnut Street Bridge.
