Local law enforcement agencies and several prevention groups got together this morning to make a point: don’t drink to excess and drive over the holidays. Increased attention to the issue and more sobriety checkpoints have sharply reduced the number of alcohol-related crashes in recent years – down 60 percent in Roanoke City since 2008 … down 42 percent in Roanoke County. Roanoke County police chief Howard Hall is also chair of the Blue Ridge Transportation Safety Board coalition:

Long-time WSLS-10 news anchor Karen McNew is leaving TV for a communications position with Carilion Clinic; she starts there in January. McNew was with Channel 10 for more than 16 years. “I have accepted the position of Senior Communications Consultant for Carilion Clinic. I have enjoyed my 16 1/2 years with WSLS 10. However, I am thrilled to be part of the Carilion Clinic mission of health and wellness through quality patient care and community programs! I start January 5, 2015,” said McNew on her Facebook page. The River Stage at The Bridges
Next year there will be new concert and events venue in Roanoke – underneath the Walnut Street Bridge. Sponsor Hounds is leasing space from The Bridges mixed-use development for events like WingFest and WoofStock, which will come over from Elmwood Park. “The River Stage at the Bridges” will also host musical acts, says Waynette Anderson of Sponsor Hounds, who spoke with WFIR’s Gene Marrano today:
