Online court records indicate the Salem man charged with causing Wednesday’s deadly crash on Interstate 581 still is being held in jail. Timothy Wellons, 34, appeared in court Thursday morning on involuntary manslaughter charges. Prosecutors say Wellons will face DUI and possibly other charges as well.

State Police say Wellons cut across two lanes of northbound traffic around 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, forcing a tractor trailer driver to swerve across the median and into another rig in the southbound lanes. Both trucks burst into flames, killing the drivers. They are identified as Paul Golding, 36, of Salem, and Kenneth Graham, 54, of Lexington, N.C. Records show Wellons has had multiple traffic offenses in the last 10 years, including speeding, license and registration violations. Police also charged him in 2009 for having alcohol on school property in Roanoke County.
