Franklin-County-UpdateVirginia State Police are investigating a two-vehicle crash that resulted in the death of a Franklin County teacher. Dona Minnick, a third grade teacher at Rocky Mount Elementary school, was driving north on Route 220 just south of Route 919 when a southbound car operated by Lesley Wildasin crossed the median and struck her head-on. Minnick died at the scene. Wildasin was transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and is charged with reckless driving.

Heart WalkMore than 2,000 people attended the American Heart Association’s 2015 Roanoke Heart Walk on October 17. Robert Hunter IIIThe Franklin County Sheriff’s office has arrested two suspects James Trentstemming from a string of larcenies in Franklin, Henry, and Charlotte Counties. Robert Hunter III and James Trent were arrested for grand larceny last week and during the investigation officers linked them to additional thefts. In the past week investigators have recovered more than $97,000 worth of stolen property.  The Items recovered include vehicles, tools, guns, trailers, lawn mowers, a tractor, and ATV’s. Items that have been properly identified were returned to their owners and other property will be released at a later date. Hunter is being held on Federal Probation Violation charges in Roanoke City Jail and Trent is being held at Franklin County Jail with no bond. The Virginia State Police, Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office and  Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives assisted in the investigation.

One suspect is caught and another is wanted after a robbery at the Dodge Store in Bassett, VA Thursday. The suspects entered the store, approached the clerks, one suspect brandished a long gun and the other suspect brandished a handgun.  The suspects wore skeleton style Halloween masks to cover their head and wore all dark clothing. They demanded cash and then left the store with an undisclosed amount of money. A witness saw the suspects leave the parking lot and then followed them until the deputies caught up with the suspect vehicle. One suspect ran from the scene and the other suspect was caught at the vehicle. A handgun and money were recovered from the vehicle. A search was conducted but the second suspect and the long gun were not found. Darrell Thomas is charged with 2 counts of robbery (2 employees of Dodge Store), use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and disregard police command to stop, endangerment.  All 4 offenses are felonies and Thomas is in the Henry County Jail under no bond.

Roanoke Police have released the name of the man who was found dead at a home on Wednesday. That morning a little after 7:30 am, Ronald White walked into the lobby of the Police Department and told officials he was involved in a homicide. Police say he led detectives to a residence in the 3500 block of Signal Hill Avenue NW where the body of David Bourhill was found inside. Bourhill’s body was taken to the Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy, but it was clear to officials his death was the result of homicide. White is charged with second-degree murder.
