Update  from Virginia Department of Transportation at 8:25 p.m.

All lanes on Route 220 in Botetourt County are now open. The earlier incident involving an overturned tractor-trailer has been cleared.

Emergency officials in Botetourt County say a tractor-trailer carrying a product containing ammonia overturned on Route 220 Saturday morning, closing all lanes of the road just south of Eagle Rock.   Residents in the immediate area near Elburnell Drive were notified by reverse 911 and asked to leave the area while fire crews hosed down the wreck.

The accident happened just before 8:00 a.m.   Haz-mat units were on the scene and the road was expected to be closed for up to 12 hours.  Travelers were urged to seek alternate routes.

At 7:51AM Botetourt County Emergency Communication Center received notice of an overturned
tractor-trailer just south of Eagle Rock near Elburnell Drive on US220. Upon arrival of fire and EMS units
from Eagle Rock, a tractor-trailer indentified as carrying a product containing Ammonia was found to be
leaking.
At present, fire and EMS units are on scene and the North and South bound lanes of US 220 are closed.
The Virginia Department of Emergency Management Hazardous Material Officer and the Roanoke
Regional Haz-Mat Team are in route to the scene.
The tractor-trailer involved has been identified as carrying a product containing ammonia. Due to an
identified leak and vapor release residents in the area have been notified via reverse 911 and asked to
leave the area. At present the vapor has been mitigated with the flow of water from fire apparatus.
Crews will remain on scene managing the event throughout the day. US220 is expected to remain closed
in this area for up to the next 12 hours. Travelers are encouraged to seek alternate routes.
