Updated Wednesday:  State Police have identified the Amherst County pickup truck driver who died in yesterday’s crash on US 460 east of Bedford. Troopers say 62-year-old William Peters, Junior of Monroe died at Bedford Memorial Hospital. Police say his pickup slammed into the rear of a dump truck carry gravel that had slowed to make a turn off the highway.The dump truck driver is identified as 55-yeear-old Mark Williams of Vinton. State Police say charges are pending.

UPDATE from Virginia State Police:  Senior Trooper J. A. Kent is investigating a fatal crash that occurred at 11:50 a.m., January 24, 2017 on Route 460, one mile east of the Town of Bedford. A 2016 Volvo VHD64F dump truck carrying gravel was traveling east in the right lane and was slowing or stopping to allow traffic to pass to allow it to make a left turn.  A 1994 Ford F-150  pickup truck, also traveling east, struck the Volvo dump truck in the rear.  The accident occurred in the right eastbound lane before the Volvo started its turn. The 2016 Volvo was driven by Mark E. Williams, 55, of Vinton, VA.  Mr. Williams was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured. The 1994 Ford was driven by William John Peters, Jr., 62, of Monroe, VA.  Mr. Williams was wearing his seatbelt.  Mr. Peters was transported to Bedford Memorial Hospital where he later died as a result of injuries received in the crash. The Virginia State Police Accident Reconstruction Team was called to assist with the crash. Charges are pending.

PREVIOUSLY:  From State Police: We are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash which occurred on Route 460, east of the Town of Bedford at 11:52 a.m. The crash involved a dump truck loaded with gravel and a pickup truck, both of which were traveling east on Route 460.  The dump truck was slowing or stopping in the right lane and was struck by the pickup truck in the rear. The road was blocked eastbound for several hours while the vehicles were removed and the crash was investigated, and reopened at 2:21 p.m. State Police are working to make notification to the next of kin at this time and will release more information after that notification has been made. Virginia State Police Accident Reconstruction was called to assist with the investigation.
