It was one year ago today that President Obama signed the health care overhaul bill — the same day Virginia immediately filed a lawsuit challenging the law’s constitutionality. And as News/Talk 960’s Evan Jones reports, the latest briefs were submitted just yesterday.

The case is currently scheduled for a federal appeals court hearing in May, but the Supreme Court is considering Virginia’s request to bypass that step and take up the matter itself on an expedited basis. In a brief filed just yesterday, Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli argues every delay in a final decision places costly burdens on all states. He is mindful the Supreme Court rarely grants expedited requests but believes the circumstances of this case are worthy of the court’s consideration. The Justice Department counters the case should go through the normal appeals process. If that happens, the Supreme Court would likely issue its ruling in late June or early July of next year.
