Virginia Tech is looking for Roanoke-area volunteers to help with a study on whether a certain type of exercise can help head off diabetes. Dr. Brenda Davy, an associate professor in the Department of Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise, says they’re looking for people between 50 and 69 who don’t smoke and don’t exercise regularly. It would mean sessions with a personal trainer in Roanoke twice a week for three months. The idea is to see whether increased muscle strength might improve how the body handles glucose.

We are conducting a research study to determine if weight training can help to prevent diabetes in at-risk adults and to find out the best ways to help people continue to train for the long-term. This project will be conducted at the Riverside 1 building on Jefferson Street in Roanoke. This training program will last for 15 months. You will have laboratory testing done at the beginning of the study and at months 3, 9, and 15. Testing includes % body fat, muscular strength, dietary habits, blood pressure, and blood draws during an oral glucose tolerance test for diabetes. You will receive compensation in the form of a store coupon after laboratory testing at baseline ($15), at 3 months ($20), 9 months ($25), and 15 months ($30).

You will receive up to 24 individual sessions with a certified Personal Trainer in our exercise facility and be provided with your study results, all at no cost to you. The training sessions will take place twice per week over a 3-month period of time. Each session will last 45-60 minutes. After the training period, you will train on your own at an exercise facility of your choice for one year and you will be responsible for paying the monthly membership fee for the exercise facility you choose.
