RICHMOND, Va. (AP) _ Richmond police have arrested a man sought in the abduction of a 2 year old boy from the scene of a double homicide. The boy later was found safe in the back seat of a stolen SUV.

Police said on Monday that Jamal Louis Clemons, 27, faces charges of abduction, robbery and other counts. They also say charges related to the homicides will be pursued.

Thieves attempting to steal copper in North Roanoke County knocked out electricity to around 3,400 Appalachian Power customers for about three hours.  Apco spokesperson Todd Burns tells WFIR that around 2:00 a.m. Apco lost service to a transformer. Burns says someone broke into the Barren Heights substation and stole some of the equipment in an attempt to steal copper. That substation serves the northern part of Roanoke and Roanoke County.  Most of the service was restored by 5:00 a.m.

 

 

Hokies for Crouse Twitter image

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) _ A student movement called known as “Hokies for Crouse” is helping to raise money for the family of slain Virginia Tech police officer Deriek Crouse.

The fund had raised more than $67,000 as of Sunday night through online and in-person donations for the family of the officer shot to death Thursday on the Blacksburg campus. Crouse joined the campus police force in October 2007 and was a married father of five children and stepchildren. Continue reading

Appalachian Power is running a TV ad aimed at correcting what it calls distortions perpetuated during the election season. And WFIR’s Velvet Hall says the ad comes a week after two of its harshest and most outspoken critics lost their seats in the Virginia Legislature.

Virginia State Police say a missing Bedford County teen may be with a former school resource officer, recently arrested and fired for having inappropriate contact with an unnamed 16 year old. Authorities are looking for 16 year old Audrey Marie McCombs. She was last seen around 9:00 Sunday night at her home. Her family has not heard from her since then.
