IRS-LogoIf you took in $57,000 or less in 2012, you probably qualify for free tax preparation assistance this year on both state and federal tax returns. Virginia is one of 22 states to offer a state Free File program. Taxpayers can find help on-line or in person at a location that serves as an IRS Volunteer Tax Assistance Center. Bike VirginiaThe Bike Virginia Tour is celebrating 26 years, and this year, the six day 460-mile tour will take cyclists through parts of Roanoke and Botetourt counties. If you want to be one of the 1,600 riders, you can attend an information session at the Buchanan Theater on Wednesday.WFIR’s Starr Anderson has the story.

DGIFThe Department of Game and Inland Fisheries reports Virginia’s fall 2012 deer kill total was down 8%  from the year before. The department’s deer project coordinator says over the past five years, the deer population has decreased but the lower population and kill numbers are not a big concern right now and eventually things will stabilize. WFIR’s Starr Anderson has the story.

State-NewsThe Commonwealth’s 4:00 p.m. burning law goes into effect Friday. The law has been around since 1950, and it prohibits burning before 4:00 p.m. each day until April 30th if the fire is in or within 300 feet of woodland, brushland or fields containing dry grass or other flammable materials. WFIR’s Starr Anderson has the story.

 

The state medical examiner’s office is asking for help identifying skeletal remains of four people found in western Virginia in separate locations between 1986 and 2012. The state yesterday unveiled models and photographs showing the approximate facial appearance of the four males. The remains were found in Alleghany, Carroll, Lee and Pittsylvania counties. The state is asking the public to look at facial reconstructions and case information to see if they recognize any details. You can go to the Virginia Department of Health website here.
