A residential fire on Puckett Circle in Roanoke County caused about 150-thousand dollars in damage. Crews responded to the call around 4 p.m. yesterday but the Fire marshal is still investigating the cause. No one was reported injured.
Four people are reportedly injured after a head-on collision in Roanoke County. Police were called to the wreck near Catawba Valley Grocery yesterday around 6:45 pm according to a news release. One person suffered critical injuries and was taken to a hospital by helicopter.
The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a death after a body was found at the Sheetz parking lot on East Lynchburg Salem Turnpike. A caller contacted police yesterday afternoon to report a man was in a car and appeared not to be breathing. Deputies are working to notify his next of kin. No foul play is suspected.
The Western Virginia Regional Jail reports a 54-year-old inmate collapsed in his cell Saturday, went into cardiac arrest, and was later pronounced dead at Lewis-Gale Medical Center. Jail officials say an autopsy concludes Benjamin Powers died of natural causes.
Bedford County Sheriff’s Office officials obtained arrest warrants for five people in connection to thefts in Moneta and Stewartsville. The thefts occurred between the middle of June and the middle of July. All five were arrested yesterday.
A Goodview man accused of fatally shooting a dog this week has been charged with reckless handling of a firearm. According to the Bedford Sheriff’s Office, Fred Dooley called authorities on Wednesday and said a neighbor’s dog bit his grandson and he was requesting an ambulance. Dooley told authorities that after the dog bite, he went inside to grab a shotgun, found the dog and shot it twice.
Roanoke police are searching for a man accused of robbing a convenience store on Plantation Road Northeast. Law enforcement arrived at the Stop-In early yesterday morning after reports of a suspect wielding a knife and demanding money. The suspect was unsuccessful in getting any cash but instead, grabbed a stack of cigarette lighters and ran. There were no reported injuries.
A Roanoke man has been charged with malicious wounding after a 20-year-old woman was shot in the leg in Salem. Police responded to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital yesterday morning after a patient arrived with a gunshot injury. Brandon Davis has been arrested and is being held without bond. The victim has since been released from care.
A local civil rights group released a statement calling on Total Action for Progress to sell the Dumas Hotel to the Dumas Legacy Group. The Roanoke Valley Southern Christian Leadership Conference — which is associated with preserving the message of Martin Luther King Jr. — sent out a release calling out TAP for selling the building to an anonymous buyer. The statement says TAP’s latest actions are a growing concern and the organization is worried the black community is being treated unjustly.
