Brenda Davy, an associate professor in the Department of Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise, says they’re looking for overweight non-smokers between 50 and 69 years old.
A purse snatching in Vinton Wednesday night led to a car chase and crash. It started about 7:00 p.m., when a man stole a purse from a shopping cart at the Super Dollar Store on Bypass Road. Vinton police spotted the suspect’s van and gave chase. The van crashed on Beagle Club Road in Bedford County. A Vinton police officer was treated for minor injuries. The suspect, Zachary Stephen Myers, was taken to jail. Myers is 26 years old and from Vinton. He’s charged with grand larceny, felony eluding police and driving with a suspended license.

A big Fourth of July thunderstorm in Roanoke gave a powerful preview to last night’s man-made fireworks. The storm slammed into the Roanoke Valley around 4:00 p.m., damaging buildings, blocking roads with debris and knocking out power to thousands. By late afternoon, Appalachian Power Company listed more than 11,000 customers without electricity, and APCO was still working early this morning to restore power. Continue reading
An inmate who escaped while getting treatment at a Lynchburg hospital has been arrested at a hospital in Roanoke. Carilion Clinic Police confirm that 63-year-old Jackie Lee Brown of Roanoke County is in custody this morning.
The Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office arrested Brown Saturday night on an outstanding warrant. Brown claimed to have chest pains and was taken to Lynchburg General yesterday morning. He slipped away just before 6:00 a.m. Carilion police early this morning wouldn’t give details on Brown’s arrest.
