Ten area organizations hope to help thousands of Roanoke children get the next school year off to a good start, and they are asking for help now to get it done. The “Back to School Blast” next month will provide school supplies and bookbags to children from low-income families. The Roanoke Rescue Mission’s Leslie Littlefield says they especially need bookbag donations.

The deadline for donations is July 31st. The supplies and bookbags will be distributed in the “Back to School Blast” August 13th at the Roanoke Civic Center. The event will also provide new shoes, even haircuts.

Restoration workers are on the job at Northside Middle School in efforts to repair damage caused by Monday’s strong storms. News/Talk 960’s Evan Jones reports from the school.

They used to be a nightly attraction at the fair but had been discontinued in recent years after some new buildings went up near the fairgrounds. This year’s fireworks shells will be smaller in size to meet fire codes and the presence of those nearby buildings.
Poplar Forest is the private retreat that Thomas Jefferson built in Bedford County, and it will mark Independence Day with activities reflecting life in Jefferson’s time. It includes music and performances that might be seen and heard in the late 1700’s and plenty of activities for children. The event at Poplar Forest begins at 11:00 this morning. A reading of the Declaration of Independence is scheduled for 1:30. Click here for directions and more information.
