The family of a Roanoke area woman who fell victim to breast cancer two years ago hopes to assist other terminal patients facing similar challenges. As News/Talk 960’s Evan Jones reports, it’s their hope that little things will indeed mean a lot.

This is not only the first day of August — this  also begins the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. And the American Civil Liberties Union wants local jails across the state to help Muslim inmates follow their religious custom. The ACLU says state prison system already does so, and many regional jails do as well. As News/Talk 960’s Evan Jones reports, the matter usually involves smaller jails around the state.

Blasting resumes next week along Interstate 81 near Christiansburg, but it won’t be a blast for southbound drivers. VDOT plans to detour all traffic heading up the mountain when blasting takes place to build a new climbing lane. The detour will begin at Dixie Caverns and take southbound traffic up US 11/460 back to I-81 at Christiansburg when blasting takes place.

A rooftop fire at the former Patrick Henry Hotel has caused an undetermined amount of smoke and water damage inside. The building has undergone a multi-million dollar renovation in the last two years, and ribbon-cutting ceremonies earlier this month marked its re-opening. Early indications point to a faulty rooftop air conditioning unit as the fire’s cause.  We have no reports of any injuries.

Roanoke is preparing for the day when wooded property near Valley View Mall becomes open to development, and it won’t be all that long before development becomes possible. As News/Talk 960’s Evan Jones reports, that’s the reason behind two public meetings, and the first one tonight.
