Roanoke County Supervisors are set to give first consideration today to  an ordinance that would expand a county code provision covering disposal of a dead animal. Right now, it basically covers pets like cats and dogs, but the change would add  farm animals like livestock and poultry. As WFIR’s Evan Jones reports, it’s brought about by suburban encroachment into traditionally agricultural areas.

It sounded scary at first: an explosion at a nuclear site in France. While not a nuclear plant, it is a facility similar to some found the United States. WFIR’s Evan Jones spoke with a nuclear energy expert at Virginia Tech to learn more.

The recent decision by a Roanoke pediatric practice reflects a decision doctors must increasingly make: what to do with patients and parents who do not trust or believe their advice. The Roanoke-Salem area Swift Water Rescue Team put its training and skills to work in flood-swollen eastern Virginia overnight, rescuing a woman from a car caught in high water. WFIR’s Evan Jones has their story.

President Obama travels to Richmond today, hoping to boost his proposals delivered to Congress last night in hopes of creating more American jobs. The visit comes one day after the “Tea Party Express” national bus tour stopped in Roanoke, and as WFIR’s Evan Jones reports, people who came to the rally are consistent in their suggestions on how to create job growth.

The Southwest Virginia Ballet is looking for children seven and up to fill the cast of “The Nutcracker”, and it is holding auditions Sunday afternoon. Executive Director Mike Lawson says dance experience is preferred but not required, and there are plenty of roles to fill.

Weekend rehearsals begin next month, with performances set for December 11th and 12th at the Roanoke Civic Center. The open auditions are Sunday from 2:00 until 5:00 at Tanglewood Mall.
