Election-2013City and county registars’ offices open up for the next two Saturdays to let you cast in-person absentee ballots on the weekend. You must meet one of numerous eligibility requirements to vote absentee, and you must present acceptable ID. WFIR’s Evan Jones has the story.

WFIR-LOGO-1Many area police departments are increasingly treating the weekend before Halloween much as they do New Year’s Eve, and they are doing so with saturation patrols for the next two nights. Police say the number of alcohol-related arrests and accidents has risen in recent years on this weekend. They use records from previous years to determine where drunk-driving problems are most likely to require attention. WFIR’s Evan Jones has the story.

New-Western-LogoLeaders at Virginia Western Community College say yesterday’s dedication of its newest building reflects Western’s increased opportunities in higher education. The college named its new Center for Science and Health Professions after the Fralin family — 13 months after the Horace G. Fralin Charitable Trust pledged $5 million in new scholarships. Virginia Tech Professor Bob Denton says each question is the product of many hours of study, but he never knows how even the most carefully-crafted question will go over. Law enforcement agencies across the region will hold a Prescription Drug Takeback Saturday from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm. Taubman-MuseumOne year after admission became free at the Taubman Museum of Art, the number of members is down and the visitor numbers are about steady.  But efforts to provide other means of increased community support have resulted in former First Lady Laura Bush’s appearance at a fund-raiser here next month, and it is already sold out. Martinsville Speedway is set to become the center of NASCAR attention for the coming week, and  the track has no shortage of help in promoting its fall race.  It is the only short track in the 10-week series of races that determine each year’s NASCAR champion, so Martinsville gets plenty of additional outside hype each October. Education-News1Virginia’s House Republican leaders will outline their public education agenda later today — their goals for the next legislative session. As they do, Roanoke County’s School Board Chairman says without more state funding next year, the school system faces difficult choices. Jerry Canada says unpopular options might include outsourcing school bus service, cutbacks in technology and perhaps even closing a school. WLNI/WFIR’s Evan Jones has the story.
